What is Aquaponics?

Aquaponics is a sustainable farming method that combines aquaculture (fish farming) with hydroponics (soil-less plant cultivation). It's a mutually beneficial relationship where fish and plants work together to create a harmonious ecosystem. In this closed-loop system, fish waste provides nutrients for the plants, while the plants filter and clean the water for the fish. A symbiotic relationship allows them to grow healthy, pesticide-free greens while minimizing waste.

The Benefits of Aquaponics

1. Water Conservation

One of the most significant advantages of aquaponics is water efficiency. Traditional agriculture uses vast amounts of water, but aquaponics requires only a fraction of that. The water in an aquaponic system is constantly recirculated, with minimal evaporation or loss. As a result, we can grow our greens using up to 90% less water compared to traditional farming methods.

2. Organic and Pesticide-Free

With aquaponics, we can grow our greens organically without the need for harmful pesticides or chemical fertilizers. The fish waste provides nutrients for the plants, creating a natural and balanced ecosystem that promotes healthy growth. You can enjoy our salads with confidence, knowing that they are free from harmful chemicals.

3. Year-Round Production

Aquaponics allows growers to produce year-round, regardless of the weather conditions outside. By controlling the temperature and light levels in our indoor aquaponics system, we can provide a consistent supply of fresh greens, even during the winter months. This means you can enjoy your favorite salads at Cafecito any time of the year, without compromising on quality or taste.

4. Reduced Carbon Footprint

By growing our greens onsite using aquaponics, we significantly reduce our carbon footprint. Traditional farming methods rely on long-distance transportation and refrigeration, our greens are grown here in Santa Fe. This reduces the emissions and ensures that your food only travels a short distance from farm to plate.
